The county's public health department is part of the Three Rivers Health District of the Virginia Department of Health. Its mission is to assist individuals, families and communities in achieving optimal health by emphasizing the promotion of good health, prevention of disease and protection from environmental hazards.

The IDA is responsible for establishing the county's economic incentives and policies, issuing bonds, and overseeing the development of public industrial parks and shell buildings. A 7-member board appointed by the Board of Supervisors governs it. The IDA can issue bonds to provide creditworthy businesses with access to long-term, fixed asset financing at favorable rates and terms.
