Planning Commission
This is a 5-member advisory board appointed by the Board of Supervisors.
It's responsibilities include:
Making recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on policies and regulations affecting land use and community development.
Development of the County Comprehensive Plan
Advisory recommendations to the Board of Zoning Appeals on Zoning Ordinance Variances and Appeals
Advisory recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on applications for Rezonings, Special Exceptions and Special Use Permits.
Final legislative authority for Exception applications to the County's Chesapeake Bay Preservation Overlay District regulations.

Public meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m.The Planning Commission also meets for a work session on the fourth Monday of each month at 3 p.m.

Board of Zoning Appeals
Quasi-judicial, 5-member board appointed by the Circuit Court. The Board of Zoning Appeals considers applications for variances to the County Zoning Ordinance. It also considers appeals of the Zoning Administrator's decisions in administration of the ordinance.

Wetlands Board
Quasi-judicial, 5-member board appointed by the Board of Supervisors. It considers the locality portion of Joint applications to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and the Army Corps of Engineers for projects affecting tidal wetlands and navigable waters.
Regulated projects include:
- Community Piers
- Marinas
- Shoreline Stabilization measures such as grading, rip-rap and bulkhead.
