Sewage Disposal

Chesapeake Bay Foundation In a mostly rural county such as Westmoreland, on-site waste water disposal systems (septic systems) are the most common and practical method to treat residential sewage.

Septic System Inspections & Permits
On-site inspections are required to determine a site's suitability for septic systems. A permit must be obtained from the County Environmental Health Department prior to construction.

Public Sewage Treatment Plants
Colonial Beach
The town of Colonial Beach owns and operates a sewage treatment facility with a service of 600,000 - 800,000 gallons per day (gpd) and an available capacity of 4 million gpd.

Montross-Westmoreland Sewer Authority
Westmoreland County and the Town of Montross jointly own and operate a sewer system serving the Town of Montross and the corridor south along Route 3 to Templemans Crossroads. A new plant is currently under construction that has an easily expandable capacity of 130,000 gpd.
