The General Registrar maintains all records related to voter registration and elections in accordance with Virginia state law. The registrar works with a three-member Electoral Board that appoints election officers and certifies election results.

Applications
Voter Registration applications can be obtained from the General Registrar, public libraries, the Department of Motor Vehicles and other state and local government offices.

You will receive your voter card about two weeks after the General Registrar receives your application. If your application cannot be accepted, the General Registrar will advise you of the deficiencies in your application by mail at the address shown on your application.

Change of Address
Notify the Voter Registration Office in writing of any changes in address. If you move to another county in Virginia, you may register in person in your new locality or transfer your voter registration by mail.

Absentee Voting
If you will be unable to go to the polls on Election Day, request an Application for Absentee Ballot from the Voter Registration Office. If ballots have been printed, you may apply and vote at the same time. Otherwise, a ballot will be mailed to you when available.

Elections
General Elections: Tuesday after the first Monday in November; first Tuesday in May.

Primary Elections: Usually held in June

Special Elections: May be called at any time not within 60 days of a General Election, but may be held on the same day as a General Election.
