It conducts criminal investigations, assists the Virginia State Police in traffic matters and has K-9 capabilities.

The Sheriff's Office also helps organize Neighborhood Watch programs, offers Drug Abuse Resistance and Education (D.A.R.E.) to fifth-grade classes and is available to address community groups about law enforcement and public safety.
