Location
Westmoreland County Museum & Library, Inc., is located at 43 Court Square, in the town of Montross, Virginia, across the street from the old Westmoreland County Circuit Courthouse.
History
Believed to be the oldest museum in the Northern Neck, the Westmoreland County Museum and Library, Inc., was completed in 1939 under the leadership of prominent county citizens, and dedicated in 1941. It was established to give a permanent home to Charles Wilson Peale's portrait of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham (1768) which had been given to the gentlemen of Westmoreland County, and to provide a location for artistic, recreational, and educational facilities.
Mission
The purpose of the Westmoreland County Museum and Library, Inc., is to preserve the history of Westmoreland County for public benefit through exhibitions, programs, and research materials in order to increase the understanding and appreciation of our heritage. Adopted July 11, 2001
Hours
The museum is open six days a week (closed Sunday). The museum is open Monday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The museum is closed on Sunday. There is no admission fee.
