Fishing

Flanked by two of the Chesapeake Bay's largest tributaries, the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers, Westmoreland County offers superb freshwater and saltwater fishing all year long.

Striped bass, spot and bluefish are among the most common sport fish found in the Potomac. The Rappahannock is home to giant blue catfish, channel catfish, largemouth bass, white perch and striped bass.

There are also freshwater ponds with catfish, bream, crappie and bass.

Saltwater Fishing Licenses and Regulations
Anglers between 16 and 64 years of age need a Virginia saltwater fishing license to fish the Potomac. Fishing from specially licensed boats and piers is exempt from licensure. Persons holding a valid Maryland saltwater recreational fishing license are also exempt, as long as the reciprocal licensing agreement continues between Maryland and Virginia.

Freshwater Fishing Licenses & Regulations
Anglers 16 years of age and older need a Virginia freshwater fishing license to fish the Rappahannock. No license is required when fishing on private property.
