Westmoreland County's Commonwealth's Attorney's Office seeks an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney to prosecute felony, misdemeanor and traffic charges in General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations and Circuit Courts. Employee must exercise independent judgement, initiative, tact and courtesy in all phases of work. Westmoreland County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check and preemployment
drug testing. 

Salary: $75,707.00 - $128,585.00 salary range; actual salary based on experience

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

  • Litigation, including the preparation of victims and witnesses for trial, review of case files and reports and review of body worn camera evidence. 
  • Researches and prepares legal briefs and motions.
  • Provides legal advice and expertise to law enforcement and other agencies during
    investigations. 
  • Reviews law enforcement investigations and makes charging decisions.
  • Participates in training law enforcement in all areas, including Constitutional issues, response to domestic violence and sexual assault cases, and new laws. 
  • Supports coordinated efforts with law enforcement, social services, and other appropriate community organizations, to maximize community awareness, safety, protection and response to crime. Attends relevant meetings as a program representative. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited school of law.
• Active member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and
the public.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in criminal litigation and jury trial experience, preferred.
