Westmoreland County Department of Social Services believes that our citizens should be able to lead the very best lives they possibly can. However when they need some help, Social Services has services and programs to assist and support. Social Services provides several financial assistance programs for those who meet the eligibility requirements. Social Services also provides prevention, protective and supportive services for those in need especially at-risk children and elderly or disabled adults.
All financial assistance programs have income and other requirement that must be met to be eligible to receive the assistance. All financial programs require completed applications and verifications. Individuals can apply by completing an application on-line at www.commonhelp.virginia.gov or coming into the agency and completing an application. Programs include: SNAP- supplemental nutrition assistance program AKA food stamps; Medicaid-State health insurance; Child care assistance-financial assistance to pay for child care costs for those working or in school; Energy assistance- financial assistance to help with cost of fuel for winter months and cost of cooling for summer months and TANF-cash assistance for needy families with children includes an employment assistance component.
Social Services is mandated to provide protective services to at-risk children and elderly or disabled adults. Social Services provides prevention and support services to at-risk families and adults.
