Animal Control

Animal ControlWestmoreland County Sheriff's Deputies enforce the County dog tag and rabies vaccination laws, pick up strays, remove neglected animals from their homes, and respond to animal nuisance calls and livestock and fowl kill claims.

Contact the Sheriff's Office if your pet or farm animal is missing, attacked or killed, or if:

  • You or someone you are responsible for is bitten or attacked by an animal
  • You want to report a stray or neglected animal
  • You can no longer take care of your pet on your own

Unlicensed, stray and surrendered dogs are taken to the Westmoreland County Animal Shelter or a local humane society. You may visit the shelter or humane society and adopt a cat or dog for a small fee. Virginia law requires that adopted pets must be spayed or neutered. Contact the Animal Warden for more information.
